Total usable~2.8 TB across 6 HDDs
HDD ageUnknown — ask seller

HDD age unknown — critical to verify: The seller does not mention the age or hours of the 6 HDDs. Enterprise SAS drives used in data centers can have 30,000–50,000+ hours. Ask for smartctl -a output or iLO disk health logs before buying. HDDs are the highest-risk component in a 2nd-hand server.

Power & Noise critical for home use

This is the biggest factor people ignore when buying rack servers for home use. A 2U server with dual Xeon E5 was designed to run in a temperature-controlled data center with 3-phase power. At home, it costs real money 24/7 and is loud enough to hear through walls.

Power consumption estimates (DL380p G8, dual E5-2650 v2)

StateEst. Power DrawDaily (kWh)Monthly cost @€0.25Annual cost @€0.25
Idle (typical homelab) ~130–160 W ~3.4 kWh ~€25–31 ~€285–350
Light load (1–2 VMs active) ~180–220 W ~4.8 kWh ~€36 ~€430
Full load (all VMs + RAID rebuild) ~300–380 W ~8 kWh ~€60 ~€720

Estimates based on HP DL380p G8 SPECpower data and community measurements. Actual cost varies by electricity tariff — verify with your provider.

Break-even vs purchase price

ScenarioPurchaseYear 1 electricityYear 1 total costvs RPi 5 running costs
HP DL380p G8 (idle ~140W) €180 ~€310/yr €490 year 1 +€290/yr vs RPi 5
Raspberry Pi 5 (idle ~8W) ~€50 (WeBuy) ~€18/yr €68 year 1 — baseline
ThinkCentre M920q (idle ~15W) ~€80–120 ~€33/yr €113–153 year 1 +€15/yr vs RPi 5

Key insight: The HP server costs ~€310/year just in electricity at idle. The €180 purchase price is recouped by electricity cost difference (vs RPi 5) in under 8 months. Year 2 onwards: pure ongoing cost. Over 3 years, total cost >€1,100. This is not a cheap homelab option — it is a cheap acquisition with expensive ongoing cost.

Noise

DeviceNoise levelHome suitability
HP DL380p G8 (rack server fans) 60–70 dB at idle Data center only — unusable in living space
ThinkCentre M920q (Tiny PC) ~25–35 dB Living room / office — silent in practice
Raspberry Pi 5 with active cooler <30 dB Completely inaudible at 1m

Noise is not manageable at home: HP rack servers run fans at high speed to maintain airflow through the chassis. At 60+ dB, this is equivalent to a running dishwasher or air conditioner. You cannot put this in a living room, bedroom, or small office. It requires a dedicated room, closet, or basement with ventilation — ideally a full rack enclosure with soundproofing.

HP DL380p G8 vs Current Plan RPi 5 + ThinkCentre

Context: The current server project uses a Raspberry Pi 5 as the always-on server (Home Assistant / Pi-hole / Samba) and the ThinkCentre M920q as primary workstation. This HP rack server is a completely different category of hardware.

FactorHP DL380p G8RPi 5 (server) + ThinkCentre (work)
Purchase cost€180~€130–170 total (WeBuy)
Annual electricity (24/7)~€310/yr (140W idle)~€33/yr (RPi5 8W + TC 15W avg)
Noise60–70 dB (data center)<35 dB (silent at home)
Raw CPU cores32 threads (2× E5-2650 v2)12 threads (M920q i7)
RAM48 GB ECC DDR316–32 GB DDR4
Storage included~2.8 TB usable (6 HDDs)M.2 NVMe only (add externally)
VM capacityHigh (16 cores, 48 GB RAM)Moderate (RPi for HA/Docker, TC for VMs)
Home placementRequires dedicated room/rackAny desk or shelf
Power at idle140 W8–15 W
Suitable for 24/7 serverTechnically yes, practically no (home)Yes (RPi 5)
Year 1 total cost~€490~€163–203
Year 3 total cost~€1,110~€228–268

When the HP G8 DOES make sense: If you have a dedicated server room or basement where noise and heat are not a problem, and you need to run many VMs simultaneously (Proxmox cluster, homelab experiments, self-hosted services), the raw compute for €180 is exceptional value. 32 threads and 48GB ECC RAM with hardware RAID is €180 — equivalent new hardware would be thousands of euros.

HPE DL380 Gen9 (12× LFF) at €200: If the goal is a NAS-oriented server, the Gen9 LFF variant (large-format 3.5" bays) is one generation newer than the G8 and optimised for storage density. Slightly better efficiency. Worth comparing if Rouans is accessible. Ask for the same CPU + RAM + HDD details before travelling.

Verdict should you buy it?

Home server (always-on, home environment)
→ Do NOT buy
Power cost (~€310/yr) exceeds the purchase price every year. Noise (60+ dB) is incompatible with home living. The RPi 5 + ThinkCentre combo costs 10× less to run and makes no noise. This machine eats its own purchase price in electricity within 8 months.
Dedicated room / basement homelab
→ Interesting if setup permits
If you have a dedicated space where noise and heat don’t matter, €180 for 32 threads + 48GB ECC RAM + hardware RAID + 6 HDDs + iLO + Proxmox pre-installed is excellent raw value. Ask for HDD health data before buying. Accept the electricity cost.
Learning / training environment
→ Good fit if budget allows electricity
Real enterprise hardware: dual-socket Xeon, ECC RAM, hardware RAID, iLO, hot-swap drives. Hands-on experience with production-grade infrastructure. Proxmox already running with 3 VMs. Seller offers demo. Great for CV/portfolio if you can accommodate the power draw.
Pickup feasibility
→ Lédenon (near Nîmes)
Seller is in Lédenon (30210), Gard, near Nîmes — southern France. Hand-to-hand only, no shipping due to weight (~17 kg) and fragility. Seller rated 5/5, offers on-site Proxmox demo. Verify GPS distance before committing.

Before contacting the seller, verify: (1) HDD health — ask for smartctl -a output for all 6 drives. (2) RAM count — confirm all 48GB are seated and recognized in Proxmox. (3) Fan noise in person — hear it running before buying. (4) iLO license — ask if iLO Advanced is activated (adds useful KVM-over-IP features). (5) Your electricity tariff — calculate your actual annual cost.
